Abseil raises thousands

Brave fundraisers were seen walking off the roof of Bedford College during a recent charity event. The annual charity abseil took place in February, despite freezing temperatures. Nearly 20 people climbed off the building to raise money for cancer charity CLICK Sargent. Noemie Salvaudon, event fundraising manager at CLIC Sargent, said: “The event was a great success and we had a brilliant atmosphere on the day.

Free school is praised

A new free school in Bedford has been praised by a government minister during a recent visit. Lord Hill, parliamentary under-secretary of state for schools, took a tour of the Bedford Free School in Cauldwell Street and met parents and children. The school is due to open in September and will initially take 100 pupils. It is proposing to have a longer school day and will be for children aged 11-16.

Olympic athletes will head for Bedford

Hundreds of athletes from around the world will be heading to Bedford for the duration of this year’s Olympic Games. A total of 15 teams, consisting of more than 250 athletes, will be using the town as their base for London 2012.

Pub wins best title again

Bedford pub The Cricketers Arms has been crowned Pub of the Year for the second time. The pub, in Goldington Road, has been named the 2012 CAMRA north Bedfordshire Branch Pub of the Year. It also won the title in 2007. Paul Davies, who runs the pub with partner Stephanie Law, said: “One thing we have been told is that CAMRA were impressed at the standard of the beers.

Student wins first Sport Maker title

Football-mad student Lee Warren has become the county’s first Sport Maker of the Month. The youngster was given the title for his voluntary work encouraging others to enjoy football at the University of Bedfordshire. Lee, who is studying sport and exercise at the Bedford campus, runs the university’s Get Into Football scheme during his free time.
