Mayor’s attendant gets chair tribute

The memory of a mayor’s attendant will live on in the council chamber thanks to a special chair. The bespoke chair, complete with plaque, was designed as a tribute to Harold Platt, who worked for the mayors of Blackburn with Darwen from 1952 to 1983.

Schools PE co-ordinator Heather Smith has netted a top role in the Olympics. Heather, who works at Blackburn with Darwen Council, will get to meet top sporting stars after being chosen as a Flash Quote Reporter for the London 2012 Games.

Health centre opened by top athlete

Top athlete Holly Bleasdale officially opened a new health centre before meeting local students and taking part in a question and answer session. Holly, 20, who is the European pole vaulting champion, opened the new Barbara Castle Way Health Centre in Blackburn.

School gets top marks

Staff and pupils have been given top marks in a letter from schools minister Nick Gibb. Darwen Vale High School was sent a letter of congratulations from the minister after being named as one of the country’s top performing schools for sustained improvement between 2008 and 2011.
