Public to help design new space

Members of the public are being asked to help decide the future of a piece of land in Brighton.

Brighton and Hove City Council is trying out a new decision-making process as it works on a project to create a new public space.

A street and small park at the Ann Street/Providence Place area of Brighton is to be redeveloped, thanks to funding from the European Union’s (INTERREG IVB) Lively Cities.

Local people will be asked to help choose the final design for the space. Five ideas will be shortlisted for a public exhibition at the end of April. A selection panel will choose the winner at the end of May, after the public have voted for their favourite.

If the approach proves successful, the council says this communication process with the public could be used again for future projects.

Councillor Ian Davey, cabinet member for transport and the public realm, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for local people to become involved in creating a completely new and successful space in this forgotten corner of Brighton and Hove.

“The city has already successfully delivered new public open places such as the Seafront, Jubilee Library Square and New Road. However, many public spaces are yet to fulfil their potential as a resource for the city and the people who live here.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what people come up with; whether it’s street art, a space for play or to have an exhibition, or creating a lovely place to sit and enjoy the surroundings.”

Architects, designers, artists and events people are being invited to bid for the design project.
