Shannon shines at Crufts

Schoolgirl Shannon Springford has scooped top prize at Crufts with her dog Angel.

Shannon, from Swanley, a pupil at Hextable School, won the title for Junior Jumping at this year’s Crufts event in Birmingham’s NEC.

Her mum Samantha, 36, said: “It was amazing. I couldn’t have asked her to handle the dog any better. She was over the moon. Her face was a picture – she didn’t know she had won until the presentation.

“She comes home from school and plays in the back garden with Angel. If I ask her if she wants to go out with her friends or do some training, she will probably choose training.

“She is quite young and has been very successful to get to Crufts – that was her goal and now she has done that.”

She said Shannon had always been a quiet girl and when she was given Angel for her seventh birthday, the dog helped to build her confidence.

She added: “It is a great sport. The children do things and learn things.”

It was the second time Shannon had taken part in Crufts. She has also taken part in other dog shows with Angel. The pair train up to four times a week and compete in shows most weekends.

Her grandmother Arlene Halford, 59, said: “The rapport she has got with Angel is like they are twins. And Angel really lives up to her name.

“We are astounded by the progress she has made. There are so many adults out there that would love the success Shannon has had.”
