Gloucester Docks Tall Ships Festival
The leader of Gloucester City Council, Councillor Paul James, has said that he is hoping that the Tall Ships Festival in Gloucester this August will be the best ever. The first Tall Ships Festival was held in 2007 following the floods. It gave the area’s economy a great boost. The next festival was held in 2009, and was attended by TV star Gok Wan. Around 60-75,000 visited the festival, adding £2 million to the local economy.

The 200th anniversary of one of Gloucestershire’s first railways will be celebrated this year. The Gloucestershire tram road for horse drawn wagons that linked the Gloucester docks with Cheltenham was first opened in 1811. The route was used to ease the transportation of stone, coal and other goods from the River Severn. The nine mile (15km) route was important for 50 years until the arrival of steam railway.

Eric Bond, a war veteran from Cheltenham lived a quiet life in his home town. He had no children, and lived in a house in Tivoli with his brother Bert for over 50 years. It emerged that following his death, Mr. Bond generously left life savings of £300,000 to the people of Cheltenham. Mr. Bond passed away at the age of 86 at Tewkesbury Hospital in 2010, but his estate has only recently been organised.

Khiri George, a lucky bride who won a £15,000 wedding was left “completely shocked” when she found out that she had won. Khiri is marrying her childhood sweetheart Lewis Peters, and they were the lucky winners amongst other couples who were hoping to win the competition. The dream package that they have won includes dress, cake, a reception at a top hotel, and flowers.
