Money raised for leukaemia charity as celebrities take on ex-footballers

Ex-professional footballers have been doing their bit for the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) as they play alongside local celebrities in a bid to raise money for the worthy cause. The teams will compete for the Daniel De-Gale trophy.

The match will happen at the Brentford FC’s ground on Braemar Road.

The African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust campaigns for more ethnic minorities to give blood and donate bone marrow, and almost closed down earlier in 2011 due to lack of funds. They were saved, however, by the Croydon community who worked hard to raise an amazing £85,000 in just three months.

The celebrity team who will be playing against the ex-professionals include Calum Best, DJ Spooney, Simon Webbe and Anthony Costa from the boy band Blue, as well as many other soap stars and famous faces.

The match aims to raise £120,000 for the excellent charity. The African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust was started by the parents of Daniel De-Gale, who was the first person in the UK to receive a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor. Asian and Black leukemia sufferers only have a 1 in 100,000 of finding a bone donor match, whilst Caucasians have a one in five chance. The voluntary charity works hard to increase the number of Black, Asian and mixed-race people on the UK bone Marrow Register.

If you would like more information about the ACLT visit their website www.aclt.org, email info@aclt.org or call 0208 240 4480. They area vital charity and any help, however small, is appreciated.
