A Croydon duo are going for gold with a song that they hope will become an anthem for young teens during the London 2012 Olympics. Jason Douglas and Adrian Brobbey aim to represent the capital during the momentous event and put the city of London in a positive light.
The Croydon based duo go by the name UGC, and they hope that ‘I’m From London’ will help local youths be proud of where they are from.
Both Jason, from South Norwood, and Adrian, from Upper Norwood, think that the Olympics is a great way to unite young people in the capital. Their ultimate goal is performing the song at the Olympic’s opening ceremony, but they are also hoping to get support for their song through performances in the run up to the games.
Jason said: “We wanted to do a single that makes people proud of being from London no matter how old or what part they come from. We want to do something that highlights London in a positive light.”
Adrian added: “The Olympics is a big deal. Next year is going to be massive. We want the single to be part of that. We want it to be something people can sing along to.”
UGC formed over five years ago when the duo were studying popular music at Lewisham College. Their first single received great success on YouTube and was called ‘Rep Ya Endz’. They have worked with both Chipmunk and Tim Westwood.
They hope that their new inspirational song will be their ticket into the mainstream: “Music is our lives,” said Jason. “It’s been engrained in us for a long time. It’s a big passion of ours.”
Adrian added: “The group is everything to me right now. It’s not about being famous. It’s about having a love for the art of music and wanting to be a part of it. We’re also producers so we want to help up-and-coming artists who are also trying to make it happen. We want to give young ones that opportunity.”
