Strictly stars are a panto hit

Anne Widdecombe and Craig Revel Horwood were so popular in pantomime, an extra week had to be added to their show. The retired MP and Strictly Come Dancing judge starred in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at The Orchard Theatre in Dartford during the Christmas period. The show was due to run until January 2, 2012, but theatre bosses had to keep it going until January 7 to satisfy demand.

Budding reporters get a helping hand

Budding young reporters are being given a chance to do some real reporting thanks to an innovative project. The Young Reporter scheme is being run by the News Shopper newspaper and website for schoolchildren in and around the Dartford area. The publication is working with more than 600 students from 70 secondary schools across the region to give them a chance to have a taste of journalism.

Schoolboy saves family from fire

A brave 12-year-old has been hailed a hero after his quick-thinking actions saved his mum and disabled brother from a house fire. Robert Noubime was at his flat in Nursery Close, Dartford, watching television when he smelt burning. He went to investigate and found a fire had started in his mother’s bedroom.

Celebrities wow shoppers

Celebrities have been popping up to keep Christmas shoppers entertained at the Bluewater Shopping Centre. Members of the public were delighted to see Peter Andre appear at the centre to launch the Christmas in New York experience. The centre had a New York skyline installed, an ice rink, Santa’s grotto, a snow slide and a winter carousel in an aim to give members of the public a taste of the Big Apple in Kent.

Students give charity shops a makeover

Charity shops were given a festive makeover by a group of college students in an aim to boost their funds before Christmas. The students from North West Kent College, in Dartford, used their skills to design window displays for three EllenorLions Hospice shops in the region. The girls, who are all studying fashion retail at the college, worked on a theme of A Family Christmas at Home to decorate the shops. They had a budget of £20 per window.
