The annual Derby in Bloom competition is welcoming a new competitor this year, the suburb of Chaddesden. The area will be joining in as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration.
Businesses and shops will be adding floral displays in red, white and blue to mark the milestone Royal occasion on the 4th June.
The horticultural competition will also coincide with Chaddesden’s The Big One carnival, so it will be an exciting time for the area.
Chairman of the Chaddesden Neighbourhood Board Councillor, Sara Bolton, is organizing the bloom event to mark the Queen’s 60th year on the throne.
June 4th has been chosen as the day for the Jubilee celebration as it is the Queen’s birthday and has been made into an extra bank holiday.
Ms Bolton said: “It is all really good for the Chaddesden and will help raise the whole profile of the area. It was an honour to be asked by Derby City Council to organise such a flagship event.”
The event will take place the weekend after the Diamond Jubilee celebration on the 10th June to coincide with the Chaddesden carnival, in Chaddesden Park
Ms Bolton said: “We thought we would have our floral celebration the weekend after so we can keep the celebrations going well into June. We have already started promoting the event and we are hoping to have red, white and blue bunting put along Nottingham Road.
“In the New Year we will be speaking and working with shopkeepers and allotment associations in the area to see if they can assist with hanging baskets.”
