Top awards for college students

The awards have been flooding in for students and staff at Doncaster College.

Students Danielle Hughes and Kanisha Fullwood and staff member Yvonne Ledger have all been given awards for their hard work and dedication.

Danielle, 17, was named Inspirational Young Person of the Year in the Pride in Doncaster Awards. She was given the top title after doing volunteer work at her local youth club for the past six years.

The teenager gained first aid and fire marshal awards during her time at the youth club as well as debating on issues for young people as part of its youth council.

Danielle, who is currently studying childcare at the college and hopes to go on to university, said: “At first I was going to do horse care at the High Melton campus but then I heard about the child care course and I’ve always worked with children so I thought I’d give it a go, I’ve really enjoyed it.

“I was really happy to win the award, I wasn’t expecting to. My family are really proud.”

Kanisha Fullwood, a third year Life Skills student at the college, won the Personal Achievement Award at the Doncaster Awards.

Kanisha, 19, has serious medical issues which affect her mobility and can make her feel quite weak, but still managed to pass all her qualifications and take part in all aspects of college life. She was described as ‘an inspirational young woman who is always chatting and encouraging others’.

Yvonne Ledger, who works in the college food hall at the Hub, won the Best Lunch Person Award at the South Yorkshire Times and Doncaster Free Press Best in Education Awards. She was given the award for being helpful and approachable, cheerful and unflappable.
