Children’s football given a boost

More children are getting involved in football thanks to a new project dedicated to developing the game.

The project, by Leisure and Culture Dundee and Dundee City Council, aims to help children develop their soccer skills and forge links between football clubs and their local schools.

Local clubs then form new teams to take in players as they go through the training programmes.

The scheme also involves football festivals and holiday camps in partnership with the city’s senior clubs, so that children can play the game from an early age and learn new skills.

Leisure & Culture Dundee director Cllr Stewart Hunter said: “”I am very impressed by the efforts that are being made to encourage children to get involved in football and have a chance to play the game regularly.

“Participation is extremely important for everyone and I am always glad to see how opportunities are being provided for children to get involved, have fun and keep fit.

“We also want to ensure that those young people who have the skills to play more seriously get a real chance to develop their skills to the highest possible standards.

“The links that have been built up between clubs and schools in the city are an excellent example of how we are playing to our strengths.”

The project is being supported by the Scottish Football Association and the city council’s education department. Funding has been approved for at least four years.

Dundee West is already planning winter training sessions in the gym at Craigowl and Riverside CSC has made connections with local schools.
