The Ely branch of the British travel agent Thomas Cook will not be closed, even though the firm are closing 200 stores throughout the UK.
The travel company, which has 1,300 shops nationwide, announced recently that 661 staff were going to lose there jobs as stores were closing.
However, a spokesman from Thomas Cook has said that the Ely branch on Market Street will not be affected by the planned closures.
The 170-year-old travel agency has seen a loss of £398m this year due to a growing lack of consumer confidence and the Arab Spring that caused a massive fall in the appeal for package holidays in previously popular destinations such as Egypt and Tunisia.
The company is now planning to work with fewer, better quality hotels and focus on online bookings.
The stores that are making a loss will close over the next few years when their leases expire. It was initially thought that only 75 would be closing after Thomas Cook merged with Co-op’s high street travel agency.
Interim chief executive of Thomas Cook, Sam Weihagen, said: “There’s no silver bullet to turning around the UK business but I’m confident that the measures will improve the profitability in years to come.
“Thomas Cook is a very strong brand in the UK and it has enormous possibilities to make sure it becomes a profitable business.”
Mr Weihagen also stated that winter holiday bookings were down 11% and the global economic downturn will continue to affect the holiday industry in 2012.
