21st anniversary for Chariots of Fire run

Cambridge’s hugely popular charity race, Chariots of Fire is ready to take place in 2012.

The event gives thousands of runners the chance to race through the streets of Cambridge to raise money for local charities.

This year will mark the 21st anniversary of the race and the two beneficiaries will be Cambridge Past, Present & Future and Cam Sight.

Cambridge PFF is a charity that champions green spaces and sustainable development in Cambridgeshire. They are working to extend their award-winning environmental education programme that works with schools and other groups.

The organisation’s vice-chairman, Donald Douglas, said: “Chariots of Fire is a prestigious event that’s a core part of the city’s annual calendar.

“We’ll use the money raised to broaden the scope of our education work.

“Last year, thousands of pupils, families and healthy walkers enjoyed activities at Wandlebury and our other wonderful properties.

“In the future, we want to do even more, opening up our programme to less able people, disadvantaged children and individuals with learning difficulties. Chariots of Fire will help us achieve this.”

Cam Sight wants to build a flagship technology centre in Cambridge for blind and partially sighted people and are hoping to raise the money that they need with this event.

Anne Streather, who is the Chief Executive of the charity which will be celebrating its centenary this year said: “Not only will this prestigious event form the cornerstone of the appeal for our technology centre, but it will also raise awareness of new opportunities for people with sight loss.”

The Chariots of Fire relay race course is through the historic city of Cambridge and is based on the famous film with the same name which tells the story of the British team at the 1924 Olympic Games.
