Makar Lochhead adapts story about Burns to drama
The Makar, Liz Lochhead, has written a new drama about the Scottish bard, Robert Burns. Lochhead’s play Burns and the Bankers is based on a short story by Helen Simpson The play will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 25th January, Burns Night, and will star John Sessions, Greg Wise and Sophie Thompson.
Atlantic rowing team ahead of schedule
A Scots adventurer, who is attempting to row the Atlantic in under 30 days, is already ahead of schedule. 29 year old Mark Beaumont from Perthshire is one of a team of six aboard the Sara G. They set sail from Morocco and will end their journey at St Charles in Barbados. The team are captained by Matt Craughwell.
Carol Ann Duffy’s ‘joyful collection’ The Bees wins Costa Poetry Award
Carol Ann Duffy, the Poet Laureate born in Gorbals, Glasgow, is in the running to win Book of the Year for her latest poetry collection, The Bees. Ms Duffy has recently won the Costa Poetry Award and has now been added to the shortlist for the prestigious Book of the Year award.
Ex-homeless Help Others
A group of people who were once homeless have turned their lives around to help others. The ex-homeless volunteers have now been awarded for their work helping the homeless in Glasgow. The group have been given certificates by the Scottish Qualifications Authority.
Fossil Grove Reopens
Glaswegians who have not visited the city’s Fossil Grove are being urged to give it a try – and they have been told they will not be disappointed. The attraction in Victoria Park has been reopened after a refurbishment.
Bikers In Pink Bras
There was an unusual site in Glasgow’s George Square when leather-clad bikers arrived wearing pink bras and vests over their clothes. More than 100 bikers took part in a four-day 450-mile ride around Scotland to raise money for a fellow biker who died from breast cancer. The aim of the event was to raise £25,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Tall Ship Finds A New Home
Historic Tall Ship the Glenlee took one last journey up the River Clyde to her final home beside the Riverside Museum. The ship was pulled by three tugboats from its former home in Yorkhill Quay after a £1.5 million refurbishment by the Clyde Maritime Trust. The work took six years to complete and the ship now boasts an education area and a green heating system.

Ubiquitous Chip Goes 3D Glasgow’s famous restaurant The Ubiquitous Chip celebrated its 40th birthday by going 3D. The restaurant, in the city’s West End, turned 40 in 2011. A digital mural with 3D images was unveiled at the restaurant to mark the birthday. The mural was designed by artist Alasdair Gray, who painted murals on the restaurant walls in the 1970s in exchange for free meals.
