Million spend encouraged

Residents are being asked to help spend a million pounds after their community was chosen for a huge cash injection.

The Podsmead area of Gloucester is one of only 50 communities in the UK to be chosen for the National Lottery Big Local project.

The project involves members of the community being given power over how the money is spent in their area.

Gloucester City Council is now urging people who live in Podsmead to come forward with their ideas for how the money should be spent. A group of residents will then be set up to manage the project.

Kathy Williams, cabinet member for communities and neighbourhoods at the council, said: “This is brilliant news for the city and of course Podsmead.

“We’re currently looking for residents to make up the group who will decide on what and where this money is spent. Gloucester City Council and its partners will assist the group and help manage the funds.

“Those living in the area are best placed to identify what the priorities should be – helping to provide a lasting and sustainable legacy for the residents of the future.

“This project will help build pride in the area amongst residents and see a large investment injected to improve the lives of all who live there, thereby improving employment, income and health.

“We need to ensure residents know what is happening and how they can get involved to shape and transform Podsmead for the future.”

A total of £200m has been awarded across the UK.
