Jane knits for War Horse

Knitter Jane Whatley has spent more than 100 hours clicking her needles to make balaclavas and scarves for Steven Spielberg film War Horse.

Jane, from Send, spent more than 150 hours, sometimes in 15-hour shifts, making garments for the new film, parts of which were filmed in nearby Wisley.

She said: “A large amount of what we did for War Horse is actually what they call weathered – I make nice garments and they take them away, roll them in the mud and cut holes into them.

“We made balaclavas, scarves and hats for the German army and had to make it look like they had been through the mill with frayed ends – it is quite likely you sit through a film and do not see what you have made because it is not recognisable.”

It is not the first time she has cast on for a big budge movie. Jane has also worked on items for Harry Potter films and Love Actually after getting involved by accident.

She explained: “A neighbour worked for Angels, a big costumiers, and she was pressured on a job and needed some sleeves knitting, so she came round and said could you give me a hand – through that I got other projects.

“It was exciting – the thing is they do not tell you at the beginning what film you are working on.”

Jane also teaches patchwork and embroidery in private classes in Cobham and Horsley and runs a dental equipment repair company with her husband.
