Students to carry Olympic Torch

Students from the University of Surrey have been announced as Olympic torchbearers in Guildford.

Lisa Roberts, Becky Robinson and Sophia Neofytou will each carry the Olympic Flame on a leg of its journey through Guildford on July 20 and 21.

Lisa said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be representing the University of Surrey as an Olympic torchbearer. 2012 is our Celebrate Surrey year at the University and I feel so proud to have been nominated to be part of this once in a lifetime Olympic experience.”

The flame will arrive near the town’s cathedral, just before 6.15pm on July 20 before being carried along The Chase, Madrid Road, Guildford Park Road, Farnham Road, Bridge Street, Millbrook, Guildford High St and London Road. It will then be taken to Stoke Park for a family-friendly celebration. The event will be free to attend but will be ticketed and will feature local performers.

Cllr Jen Powell, lead councillor for culture and leisure and portfolio holder for London 2012 at Guildford Borough Council, said: “The Torch Relay offers a great opportunity for residents and visitors to see the Olympic Flame and be part of this historic spectacle.

“We encourage local communities to line the streets and celebrate together. We are also hosting Surrey’s only torch celebration event at Stoke Park. It will be a family-focussed afternoon and evening, with an exciting stage show and lots of sports, arts and other activities to try out and enjoy.

“We look forward to welcoming the Flame and the inspirational Torchbearers to our borough.”
