Royal ladies visit Fortnum and Mason

The Queen, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Cornwall stepped out in public together for their first joint royal engagement with a trip to Fortnum and Mason.

The three royal ladies paid a visit to the famous Piccadilly department store at the beginning of March to unveil a plaque marking the regeneration of the area.

Their outfits were a favourite talking point as they arrived at the store in co-ordinated outfits of different shades of blue, each with a different hem length to match their ages.

The Queen, Camilla and Catherine were given a tour of the store and asked to try some of the delicacies during their visit, before being presented with a Fortnum hamper each.

Three children were also selected to present the three royal ladies with a small bunch of flowers each.

Itesh Patel, departmental specialist at the store, spoke to Kate during her visit. He said: “She was lovely and couldn’t resist trying one of the crystallised rose petals. She was keen for the Duchess of Cornwall to try one too.”

After the tour, the royal trio enjoyed high tea, which normally costs between £18 and £28 at the store.

More than 150 people, including former members of staff, attended the tea party, before the Queen officially renamed the store’s restaurant the Diamond Jubilee Tea Station.

Former staff member Joan Goff, 86, who worked at the store during the Second World War, met the Queen.

She said: “I told her that I had been here when I was 14 and she said, ‘how marvellous’.”
