Author Jeanette Winterson in new role as lecturer at University of Manchester

One of Manchester’s most critically acclaimed writers will be teaching the future writers of tomorrow with her new role at Manchester University. Author of Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, Jeanette Winterson, is the latest addition to the university’s centre for new writing and will hold four public events a year as part of her contract. She is joining other authors Martin Amis and Colm Toibin at the university.

A hand-made stationery and paper dolls manufacturer that caters to ‘grumpy little girls’ is now launching a range especially for boys. Online company Cupcakes for Clara was founded by 29 year old Laura Clempson who created products around the fictional character, Clara. The company sells Clara based paper dolls, stationery, finger puppets and sewing kits that children can use to make their own toys.

Baby girl born weighing 12lb 6oz delivered in Manchester

Britain’s third biggest baby girl born naturally, baby Bethany Jane Turner arrived in a birthing pool at North Manchester General Hospital weighing in at an astonishing 12lb 6oz. She is the heaviest girl to ever arrive at the hospital and her brave mum gave birth with only gas and air. Proud parents Naomi, 33, and Gavin Turner, 32 didn’t expect their daughter to be so big.
