Newcastle Sleeperz hotel short-listed for award

A Newcastle hotel: Sleeperz Newcastle, has been short-listed for a top award.

Sleeperz Newcastle, a  98-bedroom premium budget hotel located close to Newcastle Central Station, was put up for the award by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

The hotel, which has only been open for a few months, won the attention of judges at RIBA, whose awards celebrate buildings that achieve the highest architectural standards and make a significant contribution to the local environment.

Chief executive of Sleeperz Hotels, David Myers, said: “We are passionate about creating hotels that are beautiful landmark buildings located in Britain’s leading city centres.

“To be short-listed for this prestigious architectural award less than six months since opening our Newcastle hotel is proof that we are achieving our goals.”

The Newcastle hotel has been nominated in the RIBA Hadrian Awards, the North East regional awards, from which the winners are put up for the national RIBA Awards. The winners of these awards are then put forward for the RIBA Stirling Prize.

The Newcastle hotel will discover whether it has won the award at the RIBA Hadrian Awards ceremony being held in Leeds later this month.

Mr Myers said: “Our Newcastle hotel is a welcome addition to the capital of the North East region.

“The building is sleek, modern and stylish and blends naturally into a cityscape boasting iconic buildings and landmarks, including the Castle Keep, St James’ Park football ground, the Tyne Bridge and the Georgian architecture on Grey Street.”

The award nomination is a real boost for the Newcastle hotel and helps set the bar for other hotels in Newcastle.
