Sandman shortlisted for prestigious award

One of the leading hotels in Newcastle city centre has been shortlisted for a VisitEngland tourism award.

The trendy Sandman Signature Hotel Newcastle, the first venture by Canadian hotel chain Sandman Hotel Group in the UK, has been shortlisted in the ‘Large Hotel of the Year’ category in the North East England Tourism Awards.

The VisitEngland awards honour the achievements of venues, attractions, hotels and service providers working in the tourism industry. There are 14 North East categories and the winners will be announced at a ceremony on January 31st at The Sage Gateshead.

The multi million pound hotel, which was built on the site of the former Scottish and Newcastle Brewery at Gallowgate opposite the Newcastle United football ground, could be competing against winners from other regions in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence in 2013 if it wins its category.

Judges from a number of organisations including the Newcastle Gateshead Initiative, Northumberland County Council, Nexus and the North East Chamber of Commerce shortlisted the hotel for the award. The four star hotel has 170 bedrooms and a range of other facilities including the Shark Club gastro bar.

General manager Kevin Gilhooly cited Newcastle’s “great infrastructure and its place as the commercial and historical heart of the North of England” as the reason why the hospitality chain decided to open their first UK hotel in the city.

He added: “Not only has this served us well in attracting corporate clients, but it has also made us a hugely popular choice for visitors to the region who find the hotel an excellent and accessible base from which to visit all the attractions and venues this incredible region has to offer.

“We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this prestigious award.”

The Sandman Hotel Group owns over 45 hotels, resorts and inns in Canada and is now planning to expand throughout the UK.
