Perth bands win top prizes

Members of the Perth and Kinross Junior School Band are celebrating after being announced the winners of the Scottish Brass Band Championships. The band won the title of overall Preparatory Section winners at the event in Perth Concert Hall in December. They won a medal for each band member, a banner to hang in their rehearsal room and a £150 voucher to help pay for new instruments. Children design safer streets

Schoolchildren have designed cycling havens and streets made of sweets after being asked how they would make their communities safer. Pupils in Perthshire were challenged to design the safer streets by transport charity Sustrans. The Free Range Kids campaign aimed to find out what it is like to see the world through a child’s eyes.

Huge project will bring history to life

History is set to be brought back to life by hundreds of schoolchildren during a groundbreaking new project. Young people in Perth and Kinross will be taking part in the innovative project over the next two school years in an aim to bring them closer to their local history. The Living Communities program will work with around 1,800 pupils to bring historic stories to life using art forms.

New look High Street opened

A fairy, a clown, dancers and singers were among those drafted in to help mark the opening of a new look Perth High Street. The High Street improvement project was officially completed at the beginning of December and was celebrated with an opening ceremony. The work, which has cost around £1.8m, included repaving on the High Street and King Edward Street, new lighting and new trees planted.

Bid to restore city status

A campaign is being run to restore Perth’s city status. Perth is known by many as a city, but it officially lost its city status in 1975, during a reorganisation of local government. A bid has been made by Perth and Kinross Council to restore the title next year as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
