Plenty of honours in Reading

Five people from the Reading area were named in the New Year’s Honours List.

Prof Dianne Berry, 56, of Steeple Walk, Lower Earley, has been awarded an OBE for her work as director of postgraduate research studies and researcher development at The University of Reading.

She began working at the university in 1990 and has held various positions over the years. She also works with the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) on how to support studies in university.

She said: “It’s very exciting and a great honour. It’s nice and lots and lots of people are getting in touch and emailing. It’s really nice to see the support.”

Roger Penfold, 62, of Venetia Close, Emmer Green, has been made an MBE for his 40 years of dedication working for local government and for his volunteer work with swimming clubs.

He said: “I feel excited and humbled. Lots of people do lots of things, I’m very lucky that what I have done has been recognised.”

Janet Clayton, 56, of Elvaston Way, Tilehurst, has been made an MBE for her work as a trainer manager at HM Revenue and Customs.

She said: “I’m very, very thrilled and really honoured. I’m very proud.”

And Dr Anne Murdoch, of Tilehurst, and principal of Newbury College, was awarded an OBE for her services to further education.

Catherine Burke, project manager at Cabrini Children’s Society, was made an MBE in recognition of her work for children and families.
