Storm hits floating firefighters

Brave firefighters Andy Waterhouse and Pete Griffiths were hit by a hurricane as they attempted to sail around the country in an inflatable boat to raise cash for charity. The two men, who are based at Heywood Fire Station, still raised thousands of pounds for charity for their attempt to circumnavigate the UK coastline in nine days, nine hours and nine minutes.

No more faulty street lights

Reporting faulty street lighting will be a thing of the past in Rochdale thanks to new state-of-the-art lampposts being installed across the borough. All the street lights are being replaced with new lighting columns that use technology to save energy and monitor the system remotely. The new lights will not look much different but the high tech monitoring system will allow the lights to be dimmed during off-peak periods and highlight any problems that need fixing.

Landlord turns nuisance into football team

A landlord has found a way to stop teenagers hanging around outside his pub – he has formed a football team with them. Lee Durrant, landlord of the Talbot Head in Rochdale, wanted to stop the youths making a noise and dropping litter so he decided to give them something positive to do instead. The Talbot Head Albion team are now enjoying their first season in the Rochdale Under 18s Sunday League. The team has 18 members, aged 15 to …

Record numbers enjoy a nose round

Record numbers of visitors flocked to Rochdale to enjoy its buildings during Heritage Open Days. The event, in September, led to over 1,500 visits during the weekend, compared to 502 visits the previous year. A record number of venues in the borough also took part in the event, with 36 buildings opening their doors for free and putting on tours, events and activities.
