Henry VIII’s dockyard uncovered

Comedian Rory McGrath found evidence of Henry VIII’s dockyard in Medway during filming for a new TV series. The episode of Pub Dig was aired on the History Channel at the beginning of December and showed the discoveries being made on the banks of the River Medway. McGrath and a team of archaeologists were searching for Medway’s hidden Tudor shipyard and were working in an area that had never been explored before.

Training scheme helps budding coaches

Sport is being given another boost in Medway with the announcement that a pioneering training scheme will run for a second year. The Medway Coaching Academy, which aims to provide the next generation of sports coaches in the borough, is being run again in 2012 and residents are being invited to apply for one of the 60 places.

Children compete for golden boot

Medway children pounded the pavements for a month for the chance to win a golden boot. Pupils across the borough took part in the national challenge to leave cars at home and walk to school for a month. Burnt Oak Primary School, in Gillingham, was declared the winner of the Golden Boot Challenge in the region for the second year running, after an average of 91.1 per cent of its pupils walked to school. Medway Queen visitor centre opens

A visitor centre has been opened to celebrate the Medway Queen paddle steamer, famous for rescuing 7,000 men from the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940. The centre, at Gillingham Pier, tells the story of the United Kingdom’s last estuary paddle steamer, which is due to be returned to Medway at the beginning of 2012. Will a new city be born?

Medway Council is waiting to find out if the borough will be granted the much coveted city status. A bid has been launched to create the city of Medway out of the adjoining towns of Rochester, Strood, Chatham, Gillingham and Rainham.
