Southampton bids to have Lord Mayor Status

There are only 30 cities in the UK who have been honoured by the Queen and granted with a Lord Mayoralty, and now Southampton hopes to be another place to be added to the list. Two big boosts for Jay

Boxing champion Lennox Lewis rang paralysed stunt man Jay Young in his hospital bed to give him moral support after learning of his story. The former world heavyweight star spoke to the Southampton 23-year-old in December after hearing how he had become paralysed during a stunt in March.

Pioneering work at the University of Southampton has been recognised with a national award. The university’s Performance Sports Engineering Laboratory has won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for its innovation in design and testing.

A big step closer to appeal target

Charity bosses say they are closer than ever to building a specialist cancer centre after the cost of building it was reduced. An appeal has been running in Southampton to raise £2.2m for a new blood treatment centre, but now the cost is expected to be £1.76m. The appeal has already raised £1m, meaning just £1.76m is needed to reach the target.
