Rare pram display at pottery museum

A rare pram that features Wedgwood plaques is to go on show after a resident at an auction found it.

The pram, which is white and lilac, will go on show at the Wedgwood Museum located in Barlaston, near Stoke-on-Trent, in March.

It has been loaned by its owner Julie Austin from Longton.

Mrs Austin, 54, said: “I bought it from an auction site in April and since then it has been fully restored with a new chassis, paint work, hood and apron.  I had no idea it was so rare when I bought it, I’ve always had an interest in prams since I was a little girl playing with dolls.

“I promised myself I would get one when I had grandchildren.  I was blown away when I realised how rare it is, it’s just beautiful to look at but I have to keep covering it up because my cat keeps getting into it.

“When it was made the mother who bought it would have ordered the wheel size and the interior, even selecting the plaque colour.  They were completely bespoke.”

Mrs Austin, a grandmother of three, is a member of The Pram Community Committee, which is a partnership recently formed between Wedgwood and pram enthusiasts.  The Committee has organised a pram day on March 17th to show off the treasured baby carriers.

The Wilson Antibes prams, featuring a Wedgwood Jasper plaque, can be worth up to £2,000 each.

In 1959 Wedgwood supplied manufacturer Lawrence Wilson and Son with a total of 500 pairs of plaques in three colours: white on lilac, white on pale blue and white on sage green.

No record exists of how many of every colour was produced but blue is the most common colour, then green and lilac is extremely rare.  Until only recently there was no record of any lilac prams in existence.

There have been several guest speakers invited to the pram day.  These include owner of the Silver Cross marque, Alan Halsall, and Colin Ward, who has recently written a book about the history of prams stretching from 1877 to the present day.

Tickets, priced at £10, are on sale from January 15th. For more details contact julieann1972@live.co.uk
