Telford to get its Olympic moment

Crowds are expected to flock to Telford and Wrekin next May to catch a glimpse of the Olympic torch. Ironbridge, Telford town centre and Newport have been announced as locations on the route of the Olympic flame’s 70-day journey around the UK. The torch will be carried through the borough on May 30. On some sections of the route there will be a convoy and in other parts the flame will be carried by specially selected torchbearers.

Big bang brought residents together

An evening of big bangs brought residents together to talk about improvements to their community. The afternoon and evening of activities, fun and fireworks was organised as part of plans to get people more involved in what goes on in their area. Residents attending the event at Brookside community centre and Windmill Primary School, Telford, were asked for their views on a number of subjects, including what they would like to see taking place at the community centre.

Anniversary couple complete fundraising challenge

Couple Gill and Chandra Davda had an unusual way of celebrating their silver wedding anniversary – they spent eight months raising cash for charity. The kind pair handed over two cheques after beating their target of raising £1,000 for every year of their marriage. Gill, 47, and Chandra, 59, handed two cheques for £13,000 to Severn Hospice and Hope House to celebrate their anniversary on October 18.

A Victorian Christmas

There won’t be a computer game or modern toy in sight as residents pop into their local town for a spot of Christmas shopping. But visitors will be able to step back in time to celebrate Christmas Victorian style during special weekends at Telford’s open-air museum. The characters at Blists Hill Victorian Town, Ironbridge, will be preparing for the festive season during two weekends in December.

Game designer is dancing for joy

A Telford man is hoping he has got Christmas all wrapped up after developing a new computer game. Neil Meredith is hoping his new Wii game will be a hit for Christmas this year after teaming up with colleagues to come up with the idea. The game, entitled Now That’s What I Call Music! Dance & Sing, cost around half a million pounds to develop and Neil hopes it will be this year’s must-have party accessory.
