Headteacher praised for improving school

A headteacher has been given top marks after leading a school from special measures to good in its Ofsted rating.

Upton St James Primary School, in Torquay, was placed in special measures by the government’s Ofsted inspectors in 2007, but has now been described as a good school.

In their most recent report, inspectors said headteacher Claire Prynn was a big reason for the school’s improvement. They said she gave “excellent, dedicated leadership and is a significant driving force in the way the school has improved and continues to do so”.

Ms Prynn said: “I am delighted with this latest Ofsted report, which is the result of hard work and dedication from the children, parents and all who work in the school.

“It is really great to be recognised as a good school. This puts us in a strong position to continue building on the good work that we are already doing.”

Chris Lewis, Torbay Council’s executive lead for children, schools and families, said: “Well done Upton St James, this is a fantastic achievement.

“I would like to congratulate everyone at the school for their drive and commitment, which has resulted in so much progress in the past few years.

“The right leadership and support has helped turn around this school’s performance and it is now delivering a good standard of education that is helping pupils achieve good results and reach their full potential.”

The inspectors found the majority of pupils were achieving well in reading, writing and mathematics.
