Pupils become published authors

Young authors had a taste of literary success when they were asked to take part in book signing sessions.

The pupils also saw their novels appear on the shelves of their local library as part of a project to encourage their writing skills.

The unique writing project was organised by Hayes School, in Paignton, when children in years 3-6 were asked to pen their own books.

Their work was published by the school and then put on display in Paignton Library. The pupils were then invited to take part in book signing sessions for friends and family throughout April.

The youngsters were also treated to a visit by local author Mike Holgate as part of the project.

The author, who has written books on true crime, folk tales and local history, gave a talk to some of the pupils.
Cllr Jeanette Richards, Torbay Council’s executive lead for tourism and environment, said: “Well done to everyone from Hayes School who has been involved in the writing project.

“Mike Holgate has written some fascinating books over the years, and his talk will no doubt help encourage and inspire the pupils to continue with their literary output.”

Kati Jago, from Hayes School, who organised the project, said: “The children have worked on writing their own books from scratch, researching their given topic, planning, draft writing and editing countless times to produce their finished books.

“We at Hayes are very proud of their hard work and determination, and of course their finished masterpieces.”
