Stroke survivor Colin Stephenson has set up a group to help others like him after a local library course changed his life.
Colin, 72, is running a group for stroke survivors at Paignton Library in an aim to help people through their recovery process.
He attended a UK online course at the library after being struck down by a stroke, and found that using a computer helped keep his brain active, aided his thought processes and improved his fine motor skills.
His new group, based at the library, also includes visits by a speech and language therapist.
Colin said: “I cannot express how much difference learning the computer has made in my journey of life. I say go for it because what it could do for others may take them on a new and wonderful journey.”
Councillor Dave Butt, of Torbay Council, said: “Recovering from a stroke is not just about learning to talk and walk again; it is about wellbeing, community, building belief, and confidence in individuals in order that they can see and rebuild a future after a devastating event.
“We feel privileged to be able to work with Colin on this very special initiative and help him to rebuild his life.
“Colin is now determined to push for this model to be rolled out nationally in partnership with The Stroke Association, UK Online and local communities.”
A special event also took place at the library at the end of May to offer free blood pressure testing and stroke prevention advice. The day was a joint project between Colin, the council, health professionals and the Stroke Association.
