Market traders want return to old measurements

Stallholders at Walsall’s Bridge Market have announced that they would like kilograms and gram changed back to pounds and ounces at their market. The decision has come after Asda announced that they will start selling 1lb punnets of strawberries at their supermarkets. Back to golden era at cinema

Walsall Museum is taking cinema fans back to a golden era with its ‘Your Corner’ exhibition that explores the story behind the 1957 film The Prince and the Showgirl. Local man Ian Payne has put the display together with extensive material that he has collected relating to the life and career of Walsall actor Richard Wattis who featured both in the film and the play that it was based on.

New chapter at libraries

The Big Book Fortnight was a resounding success with over 300 bookworms heading to their local library to promote local library services. The annual event is now in its seventh year and authors John Boyne, Rosie Goodwin, Gaynor Arnold and Anne Bennett drew in hundreds of library visitors. In Walsall, many of the visitors to the local libraries admitted that they had never been to one of the borough’s libraries before.

Swimmers diving in for channel challenge

Some Walsall swimmers who are attempting to swim the English Channel tested their sea legs as they headed for a dip at Dover’s famous Swimmers’ Beach. Rob Cash, Paul Bates, Darran Dyke, Stuart Dugmore, Gary Edgington and Richard Brownjohn have created the Big Ricks Swim Team and are going to swim the English Channel in memory of their friend Mark Rickhuss. Mark suffered a heart attack in 2005 while helping another swimmer try and swim the Channel.

Walsall academy plans opposed by parents

Parents at Hatherton Primary School in the West Midlands are opposing the school’s plans to turn into an academy. Some parents at the school have doubts about the proposed plans for the school to merge with Frank F Harrison College and become Beechdale Partnership Academy. The plans are due to be confirmed January 2012, so a meeting was held at the Beechdale Lifelong Learning Centre so that parents could discuss their objections.
