Wolverhampton teenage carer in starring role alongside Gok Wan

A Wolverhampton teenager who has been caring for his father for over eight years is the star of a new programme focusing on young carers.

13 year old Michael Watson is featured on Gok’s Teens in an episode that sheds light on the lives of young carers.

Michael, who is a pupil at the Deansfield Community School has been caring for his Dad, Ian, with his 18 year old brother Ben after Ian was struck down with severe MS. The boys helped with every day tasks and care including puréeing his food and putting up his drip.

The show, which was presented by Gok Wan, also featured Spurgeons, a Wolverhampton-based young carers’ support group. Sadly, Michael’s Dad passed away before the show was aired so he never got to see it.

“Gok came round to our house to see what young carers do, and he visited a few others as well to see what’s different about their lives,” said Michael.

“I think the programme will be good as it will show other young carers that there are others out there and there is support available for them. It was great meeting Gok as well – he was really nice, like the person next door instead of a celebrity.”

His mother Kate, said she was “very proud” of her sons. “We couldn’t have got through it without all of us sticking together.”
