Baby Hashtag and how social media has taken over the world

You may not believe it (and I’m not sure if I really do), but back in February a baby girl was named Facebook in honour of the social media’s platform part in Egypt’s recent revolution.

Now little Facebook has a new friend: baby Hashtag was born on the 1stDecember.

We live in a world of unusual names: with Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s daughter Apple and Suri Cruise, daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, but a baby named after a way to trend on Twitter, really?

I can’t really say I’m surprised that people are deciding to go to such extreme measures to honour social media platforms, with 500m users on Twitter and Facebook reaching one billion in October.  Social media has become a massive part of people’s lives. Don’t get me wrong, I think that naming a child Hashtag or Facebook is completely ludicrous but social media has really shown its worth over the past couple of years. Something that could have stayed a superficial way to share pictures and talk to friends was instrumental in the Arab Spring and has given a way for people living in suppressive or conflict-filled countries to share their opinions and stories with the rest of the world.

Social media has also proved its worth for businesses as well, with companies around the world using it to communicate with their customers and develop and build relationships. You may feel like social media has past you and your business by, but it’s not too late to get up to speed. Infoserve can help you get online and get the most out of social media for your business, just contact us on 0845 36 77 200 to find out how we can help you.

Social media is here to stay and who knows, little Hashtag and Facebook could be the start of a new baby name trend!
