George Clooney ‘engaged’ to London lawyer

Millions of women will be crying into their breakfast cereal as rumours of the world’s most eligible bachelor are being reported by global media channels.

Hollywood A-lister and all-round dream man George Clooney is said to have got engaged to his current girlfriend, Amal Alamuddin.

According to US media reports, after a four-year marriage to fellow actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993, the actor, 52, vowed to never tie the know again. In an interview with Esquire magazine last year he is quoted as saying: “I haven’t had aspirations in that way, ever. I was married in 1989. I wasn’t very good at it.”

Now, however, he seems to have changed his mind. According to People magazine, the couple have been on several holidays together and recently Alamuddin was spotted ‘wearing a massive ring’ while dining with Clooney in Malibu.

Despite capturing the heart of one of Hollywood’s most influential men, we know comparatively little about Amal Alamuddin. So who exactly is the lady in question?

It seems that Ms Alamuddin has beauty as well as brains. She is an international and human rights lawyer and was voted ‘London’s hottest female lawyer’ in 2013.

The 36-year-old was born in Beirut and studied at Oxford University and New York University School of Law. Her role at Doughty Street Chambers, London, has seen her taking on high-profile work such as advising former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and representing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and former Ukraine Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. She is currently joint special envoy of the UN and the Arab League on Syria. Ms Alamuddin is also involved in a United Nations inquiry into the use of drones.

The actor himself has campaigned for liberal causes in the US and world-wide human rights causes, notably in Sudan’s Darfur region.

Both Clooney’s and Alamuddin’s representatives have declined to comment on the reports.
