Poole Lane Dental Practice is celebrating after being awarded with an excellence award by local health chiefs.
The Bournemouth dentists are overjoyed after weathering a 2009 crisis at their practice. Three years ago some patients raised concerned about a locum dentist using lax infection controls that could have caused infections.
The locum dentist left the dental register voluntarily after the investigation into his practices.
Although entirely blameless, dentist Ali Ebodi who was serving under a separate contract at the same surgery suffered some fallout as many patients left the surgery following the crisis.
“That practice had nothing to do with me, but because it was in the same building, it affected me very much,” said Mr Ebodi.
His wife Azi joined the business as practice manager and now the couple has managed to turn their fortunes around with the help of their staff.
The practice has been awarded a certificate of best practice by dental commissioners for its compliance with standards in infection prevention and control and decontamination of equipment.
“We have changed everything. It took a lot of time but everyone in the practice worked hard and the feedback we’ve had has been really positive. Patient satisfaction is 98 or 99 per cent,” said Azi.
“Patients started to come back when they saw the changes. The support we had from the primary care trust and dental advisor has been fantastic.”
The practice now has nearly 4,000 mostly NHS patients with some patients coming from as far as the Isle of Wight and Devon.
