Children enjoy new Forest School

Children are enjoying learning in the great outdoors with a new forest area at their school. The Maidensbridge Primary School, in Kingswinford, is developing a Forest Schools area to allow the pupils to discover more about the outdoors and learn about taking risks. The new area includes tall trees, campfire facilities and an outdoor adventure playground and is part of a national Forest Schools initiative.

Borough hopes to become a city

Dudley is hoping to be made a city by the Queen in 2012 after launching a bid for the title earlier in the year. Bookmakers’ odds have been good for the borough, which is among many towns and boroughs across the UK hoping to be given city status as part of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations.

Stroke victim proves doctors wrong

Stroke victim Simon James has completed a 1,000-mile cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End after being told he may have to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Simon, from Stourbridge, raised over £2,500 for charity with the cycle ride despite having suffered a major stroke two years ago. The 54-year-old was unable to walk or talk after collapsing from a severe brain haemorrhage in 2009.

Kind-hearted readers donate over 100 bikes

Many children will get the new bike they wanted this Christmas thanks to kind-hearted readers of a council community magazine. The phone never stopped ringing at a bike recycling charity after a feature appeared in Dudley Borough Council’s Dudley Together publication in the spring. A total of 150 bikes flooded into the City Can Cycle workshop after the feature appeared, and staff are hoping to have many of them refurbished and passed on to those who need them in time …
