Young chefs show off their skills

Young chefs showed off their culinary skills in a Masterchef-style competition. The competition, organised by Halifax Rotary Club, invited pupils from schools in the Calderdale area to put on their aprons and cook a main course and dessert for a panel of judges. A total of 19 pupils took part in the challenge, and the winner was Jadene Wade, 14, from Ryburn Valley High School, in Sowerby. Calderdale beast is spotted

A Halifax resident is the latest person who believes they have come face to face with the Calderdale catbeast. Susan Rooke, 58, of Exley, Halifax, said she saw the black creature in her back garden. She said the animal, which resembled a puma, then leapt over her 4ft fence and into nearby woods. Susan, who believes the creature was after the two cockerels she keeps in her garden, even took a photograph of the huge paw print it left behind.

Brave mum raises thousands for charity

Thousands of pounds have been raised for charity thanks to the efforts of a brave mum who is battling a brain tumour. Gaynor Stowe, from Newlands, Sowerby, has raised £3,150 for Andrea’s Gift, a Yorkshire brain tumour charity, and hospice charity the Forget Me Not Trust. The money was raised at an evening of entertainment at the Sowerby Cricket Club.

Week of events helps road safety

Organisations joined forces to provide a week of fun activities and events aimed at keeping people safe on the roads. The road safety week took place in Calderdale at the end of November thanks to Calderdale Council, the emergency services, the NHS, highways agency, the West Yorkshire Safer Camera Partnership, local businesses and schools and voluntary road safety groups.

Bin helps recycling on the go

Shoppers can now recycle on the go thanks to an innovative new bin in their town centre. A trial on-street recycling bin has been designed and placed in Halifax town centre in an aim to encourage people to dispose of their rubbish in an environmentally friendly way when they are out and about.
