Marksman hopes for Olympic place

Young marksman James Huckle is hoping to represent Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics.

The 21-year-old, from Harlow, is training hard to be picked for the GB shooting squad.

He said: “There are three spots and six shooters and I have a 50 per cent chance. That’s how it stands. The numbers could change, but I am quietly confident.

“The letters will not go out until May and I have to stay focused. I missed out on qualifying by just a point twice last year.”

James, who is studying for an NVQ in accountancy, added: “I’m shooting better every month and I’m positive. It’s about controlled excitement.

“I’ve got to keep it relatively stress free and keep doing what I’ve been doing, that’s the key.

“I have spoken to athletes who said there will be nothing like it. It will be an exceptional experience for every athlete.

“I’ve got to enjoy every second, whether it’s a hard competition or a competition where there’s an Olympic quota place on the line.”

James will take part in the European Championships in Finland in February 17-19 and a World Cup event in London in April.

He set a Great Britain record for the 50m three-position event with a score of 1,267 points at a World Cup event in South Korea in April and also equalled a British record score of 596 points when he competed in the 10m rifle event at the IVIS Cup in Luxembourg in December.

His discipline involves shooting from prone, kneeling and standing positions.
