Top month for town centre

Businesses in Harrow say a month of entertainment in the town centre has resulted in record visitor numbers.

New figures show more shoppers visited Harrow town centre in December compared to the same period the year before.

Shopping centres and retailers claim a programme of entertainment and festive fun was a major reason for the high visitor numbers.

Harrow resident and X Factor contestant Johnny Robinson made an appearance, 1,000 goodie bags were given away and there was late night shopping and more decorations than usual in the town. The extra festive attractions were paid for with a £496,000 grant from the Mayor of London’s Outer London Fund.

Jeff Jackson, manager at St Ann’s Shopping Centre, said he had seen a six per cent increase in visitors, adding: “We expected footfall to be down in December so we were really pleased to see an increase.

“All the Outer London Fund activity in the town centre has had a big impact, from the goodie bag giveaway to the festive lights.”

Keith Ferry, Harrow Council’s portfolio holder for planning and economic development, said: “These are really encouraging figures in tough times. Supporting Harrow Town Centre, our local shopping centres and businesses is one of Harrow Council’s top priorities.

“There is a long way to go but with more events planned, and a fresh bid for more funding now submitted, we are moving in the right direction and helping revitalise the town centre. I hope residents continue to support their local businesses.”
