Football-mad student Lee Warren has become the county’s first Sport Maker of the Month.
The youngster was given the title for his voluntary work encouraging others to enjoy football at the University of Bedfordshire.
Lee, who is studying sport and exercise at the Bedford campus, runs the university’s Get Into Football scheme during his free time.
His role has been recognised by Team Beds and Luton, a County Sports Partnership that aims to increase participation in sport and physical activity.
Lee said: “It isn’t just about playing football – joining a sports session also helps to improve your physical fitness and health while socialising with others.
“The football sessions are going well, but there is room for more players to join in and have a kick-about. The best thing is that we can tailor the sessions to what people want, whether it’s just a game, training drills or skills coaching.”
He said of his future: “Ideally, I’d love to work within an elite football club, helping with the sport science side of things.”
Lee was presented with an ipod shuffle, holdall and certificate as a prize for winning the title.
Sport Makers is a two-year programme being run by Team Beds and Luton in an aim to encourage more people to become sports volunteers.
A spokesperson said: “In Bedfordshire we are looking to recruit just under 700 new volunteers, termed Sport Makers, into sport.
“These individuals will have a positive and inspiring introduction to the world of sports volunteering via a series of workshops delivered locally by a national training provider and in conjunction with Team Beds and Luton.”
