A college is paying half of the train and bus fares for its students in an aim to make college life easier.
Hertford Regional College, which has campuses in Broxbourne and Ware, launched the “We’ll Meet You Half Way” scheme for full time students travelling to college by bus or train. The offer is available to students who are not already receiving EMA or Bursaries.
College Principal Andy Forbes said: “Many of our students travel a long way to get the quality education we offer. So we’ve worked closely in partnership with local councils and with bus and train companies in Hertfordshire, London and Essex to come up with a huge increase in travel subsidies for all our 16-18-year-old students.
“We’ve made sure that any young person who wants to study at HRC is able to get to us on public transport at a very reasonable cost.”
A new bike rack is also being installed at the Ware campus of the college after a campaign by one of the students.
Joe Huntley, who is studying graphic design at the Ware Campus, sent an email to the principal arguing for the facility.
Joe, who lives in Hertford, is a keen cyclist who believes that cycling to college should be encouraged for financial and health reasons.
The student has now challenged the principal Andy Forbes to travel to college on his bike.
Mr Forbes said: “Joe’s got a point. I could certainly do with the exercise and it would help reduce the congestion on the roads round Ware.”
