Road safety project wins top award

HRH Prince Michael of Kent has presented a special award to Dorset County Council for its campaign to improve road safety.

The Prince Michael International Road Safety Award was presented for the No Excuse project during a special ceremony in London.

The project was chosen from hundreds of entries and will now be able to feature the award logo on all its future literature.

Brian Austin, project manager for No Excuse, said: “These awards are acknowledged globally as being the most prestigious of their kind, so we are extremely proud to have received this award.

“The reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured on Dorset’s roads is very encouraging and all of the Dorset Road Safe partners have played an important role together in trying to make our roads safer.

“Changing the mindset of those who have not fully considered the risks of their actions is one of the key objectives of the No Excuse project.”

The campaign has involved police, fire and rescue, ambulance, hospital and council staff talking to people across the county and sharing road safety advice.

Police and safety camera teams have also clamped down on motorists who insist on breaking the law on roads, in an aim to drive home the message that there is no excuse for bad or dangerous driving or riding.

Figures showed an 18% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured on Dorset’s roads in an 18-month period following the launch of the No Excuse campaign.
