Schools carry Olympic flame

An Olympic flame was transported by limousine as part of its journey around schools in Dorchester.

Schools in the Dorchester Area Schools Partnership are transporting their own Olympic flame to each other in as many different and unusual ways as they can think of.

The latest leg of its journey saw pupils from St Osmund’s Middle School carrying the torch to Dorchester Middle School by limousine while dressed in the colours of the Olympic rings.

A spokesman for St Osmund’s Middle School said: “The relay went really well. The children were dressed in the colours of the five Olympic rings and went in the limo to Dorchester Middle School. It was a really good day.”

The torch’s journey began in October and will end at the beginning of February. It has been transported by 1943 US Dodge Military Truck, by mini bus accompanied by a fire engine, horse drawn coach, fire engine, a huge human chain, tractor and a running relay.

It has been greeted along the way by athlete Mark Newton, a bronze medal winner at the Paralympics in Atlanta in 1996, and a former pupil of one of the schools.

Dorchester Middle School’s head of Year Seven Matt Tubb said: “St Osmund’s brought it up in a limo and we had the school council there to meet them.

“We then had a little run through because we are going to get the entire school involved with every year group in a different colour to form the Olympic rings in the playground.”

He said pupils at the school were starting to get excited about the games, especially as the sailing events will be close by in Weymouth and Portland.
