Blue Peter badge for bridge

The Forth Rail Bridge in Fife will be the first man made structure to receive a gold Blue Peter badge. It is the first structure to be given the honour in the history of the famous BBC programme.

New skate park for Melrose designed by ‘board’ teens

Local schoolchildren who aren’t interested in the Borders most popular sport, rugby, are making a plea for different sporting facilities. A group of skate boarders, cyclists, and roller bladders have come forward at a meeting of Melrose and District Community Council and made a case for a new skate park. The currently underused Priors Walk Park has been suggested as a location for the park.

Professional contract for former Gala star

Two of Scotland’s brightest rugby stars have been snapped up for another two years by Edinburgh Rugby. 19 year old Harry Leonard and 20 year old Gregor Hunter will stay at Murrayfield until 2014 after impressing during their time there.

Bully battle taken on by school

An anti-bullying campaign adopted at a Peebles school could be rolled out across the Borders if it is a success. The Not Alone initiative has been launched by Lothian and Borders Police in partnership with agencies in the Borders who want to help put a stop to bullying in schools.

Top breeder Czech-ed out

For the first time in 32 years a Borders Hereford bull has been exported to the Czech Republic. Romany 1 Hawkeye D1 H28, a 16 month old bull from J.R.B. Wilson & Sons, was chosen by Czech Republic based Faflak Miroslav for his herd. Hereford cattle are the oldest breed reared for beef in the Czech Republic and were first imported to the Eastern European country in 1975. The cattle are very popular in less wealthy areas.
