Top breeder Czech-ed out

For the first time in 32 years a Borders Hereford bull has been exported to the Czech Republic. Romany 1 Hawkeye D1 H28, a 16 month old bull from J.R.B. Wilson & Sons, was chosen by Czech Republic based Faflak Miroslav for his herd.

Hereford cattle are the oldest breed reared for beef in the Czech Republic and were first imported to the Eastern European country in 1975. The cattle are very popular in less wealthy areas.

The young bull’s mother is the home-bred Romany 1 Lucy R22 D5 which was awarded first place and reserve junior female at the Royal Highland Show in 2008. His father is the imported Danish bull SMH Castro.

Castro’s first son to be sold at auction was Romany 1 Gem which was reserve grand male champion at the breed’s 2011 autumn show and has since been exported to Germany.

J.R.B. Wilson & Sons has been a family run unit since 1938 when the Wilson family started breeding pedigree Herefords. Their herd has grown substantially over the years and they now boast 200 pedigree cattle.

The Wilson family are committed to breeding Herefords and have won many awards and championship titles with their cattle including the Royal Highland and English Royal events.

J.R.B. Wilson & Sons is run by Robert Wilson, with help from father, Ron. Ron Wilson stated that the breeding and sale process has become more complicated over the years:  “Up to 600 days, we weigh our bulls every so often and send those weight figures in to the Hereford Cattle Society, which sends the data off to the people that analyse it all,” he said.

“The bulls are regularly ultrasonically checked for size of muscle and so on. We’re definitely finding, especially with people from abroad, that more and more are wanting such data figures. It’s a very technical business these days.”

Selling bulls abroad has become big business and the Wilsons recently sold a breed for £5,000 to a German breeder.

Ron continued: “What has been a big assistance has been having our own website. We’ve got all of our young bulls that are for sale listed on there along with their performance data, so that can all be seen by breeders around the world.

“The internet is proving a very important tool in what we do.”
