Bin helps recycling on the go

Shoppers can now recycle on the go thanks to an innovative new bin in their town centre.

A trial on-street recycling bin has been designed and placed in Halifax town centre in an aim to encourage people to dispose of their rubbish in an environmentally friendly way when they are out and about.

The bin has been placed between the Central Library and Northgate House. It has separate compartments to make it easy for people to recycle typical ‘on the go’ items. There are compartments for plastic drinks bottles, drinks cans and paper, as well as non-recyclable litter.

The trial is part of the council’s plans to improve its recycling service. It is hoped that the scheme will give people more opportunity to do their bit for the environment and improve Calderdale’s recycling record.

Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for economy and environment, Councillor Barry Collins, has welcomed the new bin. He said: “Calderdale residents have shown that they are committed to recycling in their homes. The new on-street bin gives residents and visitors the opportunity to recycle items on the go, which would usually be discarded as litter and end up in landfill sites. The more we can recycle, the more money we can save by reducing landfill costs.”

Cllr Pauline Nash, cabinet member for safer and stronger communities, said: “I’m delighted to see a new way to recycle more. If the trial bin is successful, we will look at extending the use of these types of bins in busy areas across Calderdale.”
