Harlow Pupils Go Green To Win

Several schools in Harlow are doing their bit for the environment, entering a competition to win ‘green’ prizes, by carrying out projects to reuse and recycle. St James Primary, Paringdon Junior, Stewards and Hare Street Community Primary, all in Harlow, are among 70 Essex schools competing to collect as many plastic bottles for recycling as they can.

The schools that do the best will be awarded eco-friendly prizes such as an environmental garden for wildlife, a solar-powered weather monitoring station, fountains and bird baths.

The idea behind the competition is to teach the pupils practical ways to help the environment by recycling, as well as to think about ecological issues and wildlife.

Eddie Johnson, chairman of the environmental and community committee, said about the project:

“It’s essential we equip young people with the knowledge and ethos of preserving the environment and this competition delivers all the right messages in a fun and interactive way.

“The prizes on offer certainly provide an excellent incentive for students to make a concerted effort to recycle, and will provide the winning schools with excellent opportunities to run exciting, hand on ecology-based projects.”
