Fundraisers taking part in this year’s St Clare Hospice Midnight Walk have been telling their emotional stories.
One participant, Georgina Rowley, will be taking part in the June event for the fourth time this year after her mother Tracy died from cancer.
The hospice looked after Georgina’s mum many times during her illness and Georgina wanted to do her bit to say thank you.
She said: “The hospice gave me the opportunity to have a break but most importantly gave her the care she needed while keeping her comfortable and in as little discomfort as possible.
“The care provided was amazing and I still get emotional when I think about the love that was shown from the staff at the hospice.”
Heather Lidgey, from Hatfield Heath, who has taken part in four Midnight Walks, said she didn’t appreciate just how special the hospice was until her dad became ill with lung cancer and was transferred there from hospital.
She said: “The hospice staff were really great, willing to answer any questions that we had. Even the difficult ones were handled truthfully but with great tact.
“He had all of the people he considered his closest family and friends visit him at various times during the day – he had a whale of a time, joining in the laughter and jokes. The nurses were always at call if we needed them but never obtrusive.”
The 10km Midnight Walk takes place on June 16, starting and finishing at the Water Gardens in the town centre. Organisers hope 1,350 people will take part this year and raise £90,000 for the hospice.
