Students plan global success

Pupils have their eyes on international success after setting up their own business.

The youngsters at Grange Academy, in Kilmarnock, are hoping for global success by selling products they have made themselves.

The team have started by creating a miniature version of the Burns First Edition Printing Press, which they hope to sell all over the world using a website and a few intrepid travellers.

They made two versions of the item and sent one to South Africa with the Head of Scottish Engineering Dr Peter Hughes, and the other to Madeira with local tenor John Goodwin.

They now plan to manufacture more of the replicas using hi-tech machines that were bought by the school with a grant from the Business Enterprise Fund.

The printing press they have copied was originally used by John Wilson to print the first edition of the poems of Robert Burns in 1786.

Other products they have in the pipeline include collectable wooden Mauchline ware boxes. Burns lived for a while in Mauchline and wrote many of his best-known poems there.

Grange headteacher Fred Wildridge said: “East Ayrshire’s rich cultural heritage is world famous. We are aiming high and we have plans to go global with our products, which will tap into the huge market for quality Burns memorabilia.

“We chose to make these unique items because they fit well into what we are doing in the school and into the national curriculum.

“We were also advised by a former member of staff, technical teacher Jimmy Gibson, who is past president of the World Burns Federation.”
